Pool Fence Requirements in High Point, NC

Pool Fence Requirements in High Point, NC

A residential pool in High Point needs a barrier at least 48 inches tall, measured on the outside. North Carolina's 2024 Residential Code sets the rules statewide in Appendix NC-A: a bottom gap of no more than 2 inches over grass, no opening a 4 inch sphere can pass through, and gates that close, latch and open away from the pool on their own.

Horizontal rails and climbable fences

Horizontal rails on the outside of a fence work like a ladder. The code controls that with spacing:

  • Tops of the horizontal members less than 45 inches apart: the rails go on the pool side, and vertical openings cannot exceed 1¾ inches
  • Tops of the horizontal members 45 inches or more apart: vertical openings can be up to 4 inches

A solid barrier cannot have indentations or protrusions that make handholds or footholds.

Which fence materials work around a pool

  • Aluminum ornamental: works when the pickets are close enough that a 4 inch sphere cannot pass and the rails sit on the pool side. You keep a clear view of the water from the house
  • Wood or vinyl privacy: works when the outside face is smooth, with no rails or gaps to climb
  • Chain link: works when the mesh openings are 1¾ inches or smaller

The gate does most of the work

A pool gate has to close on its own and latch on its own, every time, and swing away from the pool. The code also controls where the latch release sits, using a 54 inch height, so a small child cannot reach it from outside. Confirm the latch position with your inspector for the gate you choose.

High Point's fence rules still apply

A pool barrier is still a fence to the city. In High Point it needs a Zoning Fence Permit and has to meet the city's location rules, and the residential height limit of 8 feet.
